Myanmar Art In Transition

A talk by Prof. Ian Holliday, The Dept. of Politics & Public Administration, The University of Hong Kong

As Myanmar presses ahead with important political reforms, creative artists are enjoying ever greater freedom. Focusing particularly on painters, this talk will explore the use they are making of that freedom. Looking back to the long period of state censorship established in the early 1960s, it will describe some of the constraints faced by artists for most of the past 50 years. Turning to today, it will examine the art that is currently being produced, and survey some of the themes that are now emerging.

About Prof. Ian Holliday
His research focuses on issues of political development and reform inside the country. His teaching embraces problems of humanitarian intervention in Myanmar and elsewhere. Each summer, he also directs the Faculty's MOEI programme, which takes students to the Thai-Burma border and other parts of Southeast Asia to deliver intensive English language classes in marginalized and impoverished communities. He is also a long time collector of Myanmese art.
